Team handball is the seven-a-side Olympic game: two teams throwing and catching a ball slightly smaller than a soccer ball, shooting on a goal defended by a goalkeeper, played on a court about the size of a basketball court with a marked goalkeeper area. Wall handball, sometimes called court handball or American handball, is a completely different sport governed in the U.S. by US Handball — a racquetball-style game where one or two players a side hit a small rubber ball off a wall with a gloved hand. No goals, no goalkeeper, no seven-player rosters. How a Team Handball Match Is Actually Officiated

Team handball uses two on-court referees of equal authority, positioned diagonally across the court from each other so between them they can see both goal areas and both sidelines without either one being the sole judge of a fast-breaking play. That's a deliberate design choice in the sport's rulebook — a single referee running a full-speed transition game would miss too much. When the two referees disagree on a call, they don't defer to seniority; they confer and settle it together, the same principle you'll see in water polo's two-referee system, another sport that decided one set of eyes wasn't enough for a fast transition game.
